Closet OrganizingTips for Divas

Define your closet space:

Casual clothing, Work Attire, Work-out, Dressy, Shoes, Accessories, etc

Decide what is working and what is not working

For example:

  • Working-   Hooks for bathrobe, clear shoe boxes for shoes, hamper.
  • Not working- Jammed clothing, underutilized upper shelves, bad lighting.

5 steps to an organized closet:

1.  Sort clothes by subject and color.

2.  Purge- Donate/pass items on to someone who will wear them. Host/attend a Clothing Swap.

3.  Placement - Place your favorites back in closet to see how many long, short and folded items

you have to determine closet design.

4.  Containerize- Purchase storage items where needed.

5.  Commit to the 5 minute clean up every night.

More Closet and wardrobe tips:

  • Group like items together.
  • Keep what you wear often close by.
  • Utilize your vertical space and use your step stool for hard to reach shelves.
  • Recognize attachment issues- have you kept the business suit for 10 years just in case you go back to the corporate world someday?
  • Keep your closet current.
  • Use one type of hanger for a clean look.
  • Shop smart. Be selective and only bring only the best into your precious closet.
  • Know your body.  Buy clothes that flatter and fit.
  • Create a separate closet or section of your closet for party clothes.
  • Swap off season clothing in Winter and Spring.  Store off-site or on top shelf in closet.
  • Use your doors and walls for storage.
  • Hang a floor length mirror nearby.
  • Keep dresser close to the closet for efficient dressing.
  • Avoid over stuffing and allow items to breath and be seen.
  • Install adequate lighting.
